Hump on Nose

A Blog on Rhinoplasty by Dr. Loftus

Patients seeking a nose job in our Cincinnati offices frequently request that our plastic surgeons fix the bump on their nose. This unflattering contour is usually caused by excess bone and cartilage on the top of the nose. A large hump can make the nose look too large for the face and even cause a harsh appearance. Reducing the hump can make a big difference.

We can reduce the hump during rhinoplasty by rasping (filing) down the extra bone and trimming the extra cartilage. Sometimes it is necessary to fracture the nasal bones and move them inwards a bit to narrow the nose and adjust the shape. A splint is worn on the nose for five days after surgery to protect the new contour. Light walking is not restricted after surgery. You can return to light exercise and many activities after a week, in most cases. However, avoid contact sports for 6 weeks after nose reshaping.
Recovery after a nose job involves using ice packs and keeping your head elevated for the first few days after surgery. For a normal desk job, most people can go back to work after a week. 50% of people will have most of their swelling resolved around a week. 90% will have most of their swelling resolved around 2 weeks. Most rhinoplasty patients look really good 2-4 weeks after surgery, but the skin will still feel a bit firm. By 6-8 weeks, 99% of people look great and the skin and underlying tissues have softened more. After this, your nose will improve very subtly over a year. In this time, the shape may refine slightly and the tissues will soften a bit more.

Rhinoplasty can be an incredibly satisfying procedure. You can learn more by reading our nose job tips page. Also, check out some nose procedure before and after pictures. Contact us today to set up a plastic surgery consultation at one of our Cincinnati area practice locations.
