Mommy Makeover Facts

A Blog on Post-Partum Procedures by Dr. Loftus

Motherhood is likely the most rewarding experience for many women. However, women frequently tell me, "I love my kids, but I hate what they have done to my body." Mommy makeovers have become popular as women decide to reclaim their pre-baby figures. These combination procedures address the two most common areas of concern: your tummy and your breasts.

Your tummy contour is almost certainly affected by separation of your six pack muscles, resulting in the dreaded pooch. Plastic surgeons call this a diastasis; a benign sounding word that just does not seem to capture the frustration it creates for women. The muscles separate as a result of their being stretched apart during pregnancy to make more room in your abdomen. All the sit ups in the world will not fix this. Extra skin and stretch marks combine with the diastasis, necessitating a tummy tuck, or Abdominoplasty. If you have gained weight, liposuction may help improve your shape as well. The hips, flanks and thighs are common areas to be treated after pregnancy.

Your breasts probably enlarged significantly while you were pregnant. Unfortunately, they probably deflated after you stopped breast feeding. The over stretched skin often loses its elasticity and cannot tighten. This leaves you with too much skin and not enough breast volume to fill it. Sagginess is the result.

If you like the size of your breasts, but dislike the sag, a mastopexy (breast lift) is a great option. A breast lift removes excess skin, raises the nipple to the center of the breast and creates a better shape. Thus, you get a perkier breast.

If your breasts do not have enough volume, you may want to consider a breast augmentation. Implants can fill out the lost volume, and even add some extra if you wish. If the volume from the implants fills out the skin adequately and produces a good shape, you’re finished. If there is still excess skin or the nipple is too low, you need a mastopexy in addition to the augmentation.

If your breasts are too large for your taste, a breast reduction would help. This operation removes excess weight and skin from the breast. In addition, the shape is improved to restore perkiness.

As you can see, a Mommy Makeover is not one specific procedure. Rather, it is a combination of breast and tummy procedures customized to fit your needs. You can be happy about your kids and happy with your body. The best of both worlds!

For those of you who are still in doubt, don’t hesitate to call to schedule a consultation.
