Top 5 Liposuction Considerations

A Blog on the Finer Points of Lipo by Dr. Loftus

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures these days. Despite its popularity, not every woman is a good candidate for the operation. In our plastic surgery practice, we consider your goals and then assess the following five factors to evaluate the likelihood that we can keep you safe and give you a good result with liposuction.
  1. Liposuction Areas Treated
Certain areas of the body respond well to liposuction. Others are less ideal. Women tend to accumulate fat disproportionately in the hips and outside thighs. I say disproportionate because despite diet and exercise, these areas are frequently resistant to weight loss. Genetics plays a huge role here. Exercising and dieting will probably result in frustration rather than the results you want. This is a perfect job for liposuction. We can remove this resistant fat to sculpt a better contour. The upper arms, hips, flanks, abdomen and outer plus inner thighs are areas that respond well. The rear thighs, buttocks, forearms and calves can be treated with liposuction, but necessitate caution. It is more difficult to get a good result in these areas.
  2. Volume of Fat Removed with Liposuction
Five liters is the maximum safe volume of fat that can be removed in one session for an outpatient operation. If you need much more fat removed than this, you should have the surgery performed at the hospital.
  3. Loose Skin Prior to Liposuction
Excess skin lessens the quality of results from liposuction. When fat is sucked out, the skin deflates. The skin must contract to give you a nice contour. If it does not, you will have loose, hanging skin. If you start with loose skin, you will make it worse with liposuction. If you have loose skin you will be better served with body lift or tummy tuck procedures, both of which tighten loose skin.
  4. Skin Elasticity Before Liposuction
Even if you do not have loose skin before liposuction, you must have enough elasticity for the skin to retract after it deflates through lipo. If your skin has enough elasticity to shrink down after fat removal, you will have a good result. Lipo garments and Endermology help with this.
  5. Diet and Exercise Habits Before and After Liposuction
The unfortunate truth is that it takes effort to maintain your results. We recommend that you start as close to your ideal weight as possible. If you are able to maintain this weight for several months minimum, liposuction improves your contour by removing those resistant areas. You will get a better result, and you will be more likely to maintain it.
