Body Lift Versus Tummy Tuck

A Blog on the Difference Between Body Lift and Tummy Tuck by Dr. Loftus

There are many terms used to describe the various body contouring procedures and sometimes it gets a bit confusing. If your midsection is a concern, this blog will help you decide between a body lift and a tummy tuck. We recommend procedures based on your individual concerns. In fact, we do not look at these procedures as operations that are done the same way each time. Your best result will come from the procedure being adapted to your body and goals.

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, essentially makes the front of your abdomen look better. It removes extra skin, tightens the inner girdle or core, and flattens your tummy. For the sake of this comparison, think of an abdominoplasty mostly making the front better. It can make the sides better in some cases, too. If you have a pooch from separated six pack muscles, stitching them back together during surgery will pull in the waist a bit. If you have a lot of extra skin on the sides, an extended tummy tuck may be necessary to take out more skin. This may involve extending the tummy tuck incision further out on your sides, or it may involve a vertical incision on the front of your abdomen to pull in the extra skin from your sides. Extra fat on the sides, flanks or hips may require liposuction for maximal improvement.

If your extra skin goes beyond your front and sides and extends to your lower back, a body lift, sometimes called circumferential abdominoplasty, may best fit your needs. Essentially, the incisions are carried all the way around your waist. The body lift is great for people who have lost weight and now find a donut of extra skin around their midsection. Beyond getting rid of this spare tire of extra skin, there are some other cosmetic benefits. The skin removed on the sides results in tension on the outer thigh area- this can provide a lift and improve the "saddle bag" or outer thigh area. An additional benefit from the circumferential abdominoplasty is the lift it gives to your rear. The skin removed from your back side allows your plastic surgeon to give you a buttock lift as well. This is a welcomed benefit as many people who have lost a lot of weight tend to lose shape in the gluteal region from skin sagging and deflation.

We can give you the best result with these operations when you are close to your desired or ideal weight. A better contour can make it easier to exercise, make you feel better about yourself and make clothes fit much better. You can schedule a consultation with us so that we can formulate an individualized plan for your body contouring.
