Breast Aug Recovery: Comfort

A Blog on Optimizing your Recovery by Dr. Loftus

Our breast augmentation patients receive extensive post-operative instructions detailing how to take care of themselves and what to expect after surgery. We thought it would be helpful to develop blogs about what to expect after surgery if you are considering breast implants. Women from across the United States and around the world use our website as a great resource. That being said, this information should not be taken as medical advice and you should consult your plastic surgeon for their recommendations tailored to you. If you would like me to take care of you, contact us. We would love to help you achieve your goals.

We have put a lot of thought into keeping you as comfortable as possible during and after surgery. It starts when your personal nurse greets you at our surgery center and guides you through every step on your procedure day.

Your breast augmentation will seem like it is over in a blink, thanks to anesthesia. The first thing you will probably remember after your procedure is waking up in the recovery room. We take the extra step of injecting numbing medicine during surgery to keep you more comfortable. Mostly, our patients describe a feeling of tightness in their breasts after surgery, rather than pain. When you are awake enough and it is safe, you will get to go home. You will need an adult to stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. The first day, you may feel a little sleepy and will not want to do much.

We approach the treatment of your discomfort in multiple ways. Beyond the numbing medicine we inject during surgery, we have several medications that we can prescribe. First, we offer a narcotic, like Percocet or Vicodin. These are both very effective medicines. Next, we offer Celebrex, an anti-inflammatory that reduces pain without making you sleepy. Finally, we offer a muscle relaxer for patients having their implants placed under the muscle. This helps with the sensation of tightness. All of these medicines work in different ways and can be taken together to maximize your comfort. Most patients take pain medicines the first few days, but some don't need them at all. For more information read our tips for speeding your recovery.

Worried about nausea? Our rate of post op nausea is less than 2%! Even among patients who complain about past problems with nausea after surgery. We have multiple nausea medicines at our disposal to prevent this. If you are more nausea prone than average, we will give you a combination of medicines to keep you comfortable.
