Brow Lift – Underappreciated and Powerful

Breast augmentation, tummy tucks, eyelid lifts and facelifts are very common plastic surgery procedures. They give people great results and everyone knows it. Conversely, few people appreciate the power of the brow lift. Extra skin on the eyelids makes everyone feel as if they look tired and older. People often fixate on this. They fail to realize that much of the upper eyelid skin is not extra skin at all. In fact, it is skin that the sagging brow has pushed down onto the upper eyelid. A lower positioned brow has a stern, somewhat angry appearance. This compounds with the tired appearance that extra eyelid skin causes.

A sagging brow is most apparent at the outer aspect of the eyes where it causes hooding of skin over the upper eyelids. Raising the eyebrow at the outer portion improves this significantly. This maneuver opens the eyes and brightens them. It also reduces the amount of "extra" skin on the upper eyelids. Some women may not even need an upper eyelid lift after this. Most still need a small amount of skin removed.

A brow lift plus eyelid lift is akin to an upper facelift and improves the areas that a facelift does not touch. Since the saggy brow problem is evident around the eyes, most people assume the solution begins and ends there as well. Instead, it begins behind your hairline in the scalp. For many women, a brow lift can be performed endoscopically through small incisions behind the hairline. In this technique, we use a small fiber optic camera to work through the tiny incisions. Often times, we can do this in our office operating room with local anesthesia and sedation. If you have a severe amount of droop, a more traditional coronal brow lift may be necessary, but this can usually be performed with local anesthesia and sedation, as well.
The slow descent of your brow over time is not something you typically notice until you have one of those early morning conferences with yourself in front of the mirror and realize that you look tired, stern, angry, unhappy and all of those bad things that you are not necessarily feeling inside. Most patients decide to do something about it because they want to look like they feel, and because they do not want others to perceive that they feel all of these negative things. When a brow lift opens up the eyes, you will look brighter and feel brighter. This is why the brow lift is one of the most underappreciated procedures in plastic surgery.
